Kola nut (Cola) is a culturally significant and economically vital agricultural export from West Africa. Widely recognized for its high caffeine content, traditional uses, and applications in the global beverage, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries, Nigeria stands as one of the world’s largest producers of premium kola nuts.

Countries Where Kola Nuts Are Found

The kola tree is native to the tropical rainforests of Africa. Key producing countries include:

  • West Africa: Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Republic of Benin, and Togo.
  • Central and Other Regions: Cameroon, Gabon, Central African Republic, and cultivated patches in tropical regions of South America (such as Brazil) and the Caribbean.

Main Species and Types of Kola Nuts

While there are over 120 species in the Cola genus, two main commercial species dominate global trade:

  • Cola nitida (Gbanja / Nut with 2 Cotyledons): The primary commercial species preferred for industrial extraction and international export. The nut easily splits into two halves (cotyledons) and comes in white, pink, and deep red varieties.
  • Cola acuminata (Abata / Nut with 3 to 6 Cotyledons): The culturally prized nut in West Africa, primarily used in ceremonies, traditional rites, and local consumption. It naturally splits into three, four, or more segments.
  • Other Wild/Regional Species: Includes Cola verticillata (Owe) and Cola ballayi, which are less common in commercial trade.

Kola Nut Varieties in Nigeria

Nigeria cultivates both major species across its southern rainforest and middle-belt region:

  • Gbanja (Cola nitida): Heavily cultivated in the South-West (Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ondo) and widely distributed through northern trade centers like Kano. This is the main type processed for industrial export.
  • Abata (Cola acuminata): Grown extensively across the South-East, South-South, and parts of the South-West. It holds deep cultural value among the Igbo and Yoruba ethnic groups.
